At West Market Street UMC we believe in working as a team in the spiritual formation of children and youth, to help guide them from birth to graduation. Meet the team that helps shape our ministries.
Director of Family Ministry
Ginger Shields has always loved spending time with young people but didn't realize that God was calling her to minister to them until recently. She joined the staff at West Market Street United Methodist Church in September 2010 after making a living as a tax attorney for many years. Ginger loves teaching and sharing Christ's love with children and youth in interesting and creative ways. She believes that it is extremely important for families to focus on their relationship with Jesus because it is the only thing that will matter in one hundred years.
Ginger and her husband Chris have three wonderful kids--Maria, Amelia, and Alex--and a super sweet dog, Sophie. In between soccer games, track meets, and art lessons, Ginger loves to read, swim, and play outdoors.
Director of Youth Ministry
Marcus joined our team in November 2014. Before joining West Market Street, Marcus served in churches in Clinton, North Carolina and South Boston, Virginia in youth ministry. Marcus received his B.A. in Religion and his Masters of Divinity from Campbell University. Marcus feels called to youth ministry and believes that youth can be a real catalyst for change and growth within the Church. Marcus has a wife named Samantha and in their free time enjoys hiking, trying new local restaurants, and spending time outdoors.

Director of Children's Ministry
Erin Althaus has worked in Children's Ministry for over 8 years. She started working in the most important room in the church, the church nursery, as the Nursery Coordinator in Austin, Texas, her hometown. Upon moving to Greensboro in 2012, God led her to West Market Street UMC and laid the foundation for her new adventure, leading children and families to God as the Children's Ministry Director. She is very passionate about empowering families and creating special times together for them, as families are the cornerstone of our children's faith formation.
Erin has a husband, Brian, and 3 rowdy kids, Preston, Emerson and Addison. They love to spend time cooking, playing soccer and hanging out.
Family Ministry Logistics Coordinator
Barbie has worked in several volunteer capacities with Children's Ministry for 12 years and joined the staff in September 2013. Before choosing to be a stay-at-home mom in 2000, she worked as a technical writer, field services manager, resource manager, and career developer.
While working in Family Ministries, Barbie has grown to enjoy the energy and incredible sense of authenticity kids often have. She thinks it's pretty neat when kids "get" the parables or lessons in the Bible that demonstrate their open minds and hearts for Christ.
She loves to see her way cool sons, Jake and Ben, grow and learn about themselves from new places, people and things. Her prayer is they will always love their neighbors as they love themselves. When the boys are busy doing their own things, Barbie enjoys golf, reading, board games and hanging out on the homestead's deck with family and friends.
