Sunny Days

One of my favorite children’s shows has always been Sesame Street. I loved it as a kid, and my kids have always it too. I was excited to watch it with my kids as they grew up and now we are watching it with Jamie. We have enjoyed many of years of Sesame Street in our house!

The theme song on Sesame Street is a great one, “Sunny days sweeping the clouds away.” I love sunny days! Unfortunately I am one who is easily affected by grey gloomy clouds. I’m pretty sure as much as I want to live in Seattle, I don’t think I could take all the gray and clouds. I would be too gloomy and blue all the time without much sun.

But Greensboro has its share of cloudy days. Cloudy days are something that I had to adjust to since moving here 5 years ago. Austin just doesn’t really have many cloudy days. Wide-open blue skies are more what you see there.

When we first moved here, the frequent clouds and grey skies discouraged me. The clouds did, and still can, affect my attitude. My mood seemed to take on the atmosphere’s mood, gloomy and gray. It had an amazing power over me.  I’m sure some of you have felt that way a time or two - affected by the weather.

One particularly cloudy day, I was thinking about the clouds and the sun and I had a realization. I know this is going to sound silly but here it is – I realized that just because I can’t see the sun, doesn’t mean its not there. Its still behind those grey clouds, shining brightly, I just couldn’t see it. Wow! I don’t know why I never thought that before! I was so focused on what I could actually see that I never even thought about what might be behind the clouds. Of course the sun is still there behind the clouds! It is always there in the sky. Just because I can’t see it doesn’t mean its not there. I have faith that it is there.

We set our eyes not on what we see but on what we cannot see. What we see will last only a short time, but what we cannot see will last forever. 2 Corinthians 4:18

And even though we don’t see God, we have faith that He is there.

The thing is we don’t actually see God either.  We see His creations all around us. We feel His love through other people. We hear His voice through the Holy Spirit.

Faith means being sure of the things we hope for and knowing that something is real even if we do not see it. Hebrews 11:1.

Especially when we can’t see Him.

I don’t know about you but sometimes its seems easy to forget that God is there. On trying days when I’m fighting with my teenagers. On sad days when my friends move away. On hard days when I’ve been wounded by someone. Its hard to remember that God is there because I can’t see Him. I might not feel Him because I’m not feeling love from others. I might not see Him because I won’t be paying attention to His creation. I might not hear Him because I won’t be listening for Him. But the truth is, He is always there, loving me and caring for me.

I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go. Genesis 28:15

Especially when we can’t see Him.

We will have hard days, sad days, trying days and cloudy days. We will also have good days, happy days and sunny days. On the sunny days and on the dark days, God is always there. In the good and in the bad, God is always there, even when we can’t see Him.  Especially when we can’t see Him.

We live by what we believe, not by what we can see. 2 Corinthians 5:7

Especially when we can't see Him.

On those cloudy days when you are feeling gloomy and down because you can’t see and feel the sun, remember that the sun is still there shining brightly behind those clouds. On those hard, dark days when you are feeling down because of this world, remember that God is still there, shining behind the darkness loving you with an everlasting love that will never let you go.

Let’s remember that every day can be a sunny day despite the clouds.

Especially when we can’t see Him.
