Who am I?: High School Small Groups 4.10.16

Session Summary

Doesn't everyone want to step u pin life? That's what this whole series is about: how we can be people who step up. Within sight of the Promised Land, Moses is dead. And Joshua is in line to lead. And I guarantee you there was one simple question rattling around in his brain: "Who, me?" Back in the day, people had an adjective that went with their name like "Alexander the Great." When someone doesn't know how to fill in this blank, it always results in some negative side effects.

  • We compare
  • We compensate
  • We cower

While Joshua was focused on who he wasn't, God spoke into who he could be: a strong and courageous leader of his people. Who God is was more than enough to fill in Joshua's blank. In fact, it was the only thing that really mattered at the end of the day. God wants to fill in the blank for you. Who God is matters more than who you're not. And because He is with you, you can be strong and courageous. I want you to fill in that blank with the things that God says about you. The God who created you is inviting you to step up and step into His plan for you.

Bottom Line

Who God is matters more than who you're not.

Scripture

5 So Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, -Deuteronomy 34:5a

6 “Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them. 7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. 8 Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do. 9 This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” -Joshua 1:6-9
