“Then the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai: ‘Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?’” Haggai 1:3-4
After their exile by the Babylonians the Israelites returned to their homeland and started the process of rebuilding the Temple, which had been destroyed by their enemies. Sixteen years after the return the Temple work was largely unfinished because the people had put their personal needs and desires ahead of God’s work. The Israelites were not practicing good stewardship and notice the results of their failure to obey and trust God.
• Their planting resulted in a pitiful harvest of crops.
• There is food to eat and wine to drink but not an over abundance.
• Because of the low profits from their crops they could not afford to replace worn out clothing.
• The money they earned just seemed to have less and less buying power.
Whenever we disobey God by selfishly holding on to what we have instead of giving a portion of it back to Him we are cheating God and ourselves. Remember that God can always do MORE when we practice on living with LESS. God wants to bless you and His provisions are always in proportion with our stewardship.
